Countertops are an important component of a kitchen or bathroom’s overall style. The finer details, such as the countertop edge, can often make a dramatic difference in the final look of a room. There are many different countertop edge designs to choose from. Here are some of the current trends you may want to consider.

Waterfall Edge

A “waterfall” is when the countertop comes out to the edge of the cabinetry and then continues vertically down the side of the cabinet to the floor. This is a wonderful way to truly showcase the color and pattern of your countertop, as it will take center stage with this trend.  Waterfall Edge – Curava Recycled Glass Arctic Countertop

No Overhang

Countertops with no overhang (flush countertops) have become popular as they create a sharp, minimalist look. With this design, cabinets and hardware are not protected from spills as they are with traditional countertops that extend past the face of doors and drawers. However, the sleek style this design provides may be enough to offset any extra cleaning that comes along with it.  Alberta Quartz Countertop

Overhanging Cliff Edges

In contrast, to flush edges, another trend has been to extend the edge of the countertop past the cabinetry, providing a free-hanging surface with extra space underneath. This allows for some convenient options, such as seating around a kitchen island or storing functional items like decorative recycling bins. Calacatta Borghini Marble Slab Countertop

Varying Degrees of Thickness

Using countertops with different degrees of thickness has become fashionable and is a lovely way of creating a subtle, yet intriguing, focal point. Traditionally, countertops have been made 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 inches thick. Now there are options to select thinner or thicker edges, varying from as thin as half an inch to as thick as five inches.
